This project was a refreshing new take on government work
Codesmith – TrueTandem
FedRAMP (Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program) has made finding a verified and secure cloud solution a far less daunting and stressful process. Their existing marketplace had some pain points defined by their user base, both government agencies looking for solutions and providers offering solutions.
Our goal was to redesign the marketplace based on this user feedback as well as our own findings and experience. Partnering with TrueTandem and working with 18F was fantastic but the product owner was the real hero here by being engaged, excited, brilliant, and open to new ideas. We had a short timeline and opted for 1 week sprints to meet the deadline.
Existing user feedback was a great start for planning this project. We built on this with short discussions with people from both user bases. Hearing this feedback and asking questions were essential to defining project our project goals.
Armed with a understanding of who was using the marketplace and what was most important to them we starting planning out the space.
We wanted some top level stats for each of the 3 FedRAMP categories, Ready, In Process, and Verified. This micro infographic doubled as a quick way to filter the marketplace if for example an agency was only looking for Verified solutions.
Other important features were in depth filtering which took shape in our left hand filters and search and the ability to compare solutions side by side. There was also a need for the cumulative number of authorizations to be shown per provider/solution, this became our blue leaderboard scoring tile style.
Style and prototype
We explored a few looks within the existing FedRAMP branding then narrowed it down to one with the product owner.
The prototype was up quickly and we started testing and designing the other elements neeeded.
We had a few users lined up for usability testing sessions. Remote sessions watching users interact with the new marketplace helped use figure out what was working well and what needed more thinking. We also got a lot of great feedback on priority of information and shifted a few things around.
After rounds of testing and refinements we were ready to go!
The product owner and full team were happy and the marketplace has been going strong.
